Alphabet Activities for Kids: 10 Easy Ways to Teach ABC at Home
Team ThinkoraSinging the ABC song is a lovely start, but it teaches letter names in a fixed order. To read, children need something different: to recognise each letter on its own and know the sound it makes. That is called phonics, and it is far easier to teach through play than through flash drills.
Sounds before names
When you show your child the letter B, say "buh" as in ball, rather than "bee". When they later see B-A-T, they can blend "buh-a-tuh" into bat. Children who learn sounds first usually start reading more easily.
Which letters to teach first?
Many phonics programmes start with s, a, t, p, i, n because they make lots of simple words (sat, pin, tap, nap). You can also start with the letters in your child's name, which they will find the most exciting.
10 alphabet activities
1. Letter of the day
Pick one letter. Find five things at home that start with its sound. Take a photo of each one.
2. Letter and picture matching
Match each letter to a picture that starts with that sound. Alpha Match does this with 52 self-correcting pieces covering A to Z, so your child can only complete a pair when it is correct.
3. Sound treasure hunt
Hide objects around a room. Your child finds them and sorts them into groups by first sound.
4. Sand or rava tracing
Spread a thin layer on a tray. Your child traces letters with a finger while saying the sound.
5. Body letters
Make letters with your arms and legs. T, Y and X are easy. Try making them together.
6. I spy with sounds
"I spy something that starts with mmm." Much better than using letter names.
7. Magnetic or sticker letters on the fridge
Spell your child's name, then family members' names.
8. Picture card sorting
Sort picture cards by first sound. Think & Find's 100 picture cards work well for this.
9. Silly rhymes
"Cat, bat, hat, zat." Nonsense words are fine. Rhyming shows children how words are built.
10. Read, point and pause
When reading a picture book, point to a big letter and ask, "What sound does this make?"
Upper case or lower case first?
Most books children read use lower case letters, so many teachers introduce lower case early. Puzzles and early games often use capitals because they are easier to tell apart. Both together is perfectly fine.
Don't forget your second language
If your child is also learning Hindi, follow the same sound-first approach. Our guide on how to teach Hindi varnmala at home explains a simple 4-week plan.

Many children recognise most letters between 4 and 5, and know their sounds by 5 to 6. Some are earlier, some later, and both are normal.
How can I teach ABC without a phone?
Use real objects, picture cards and letter puzzles. Hands-on alphabet activities are usually remembered better than videos.
What is a good ABC puzzle for a 4 year old?
Look for thick pieces, one letter per piece and a picture word for each letter, like Alpha Match. Explore all alphabet and number learning games, free delivery across India.
